A note on independence
Rowanglen Business Loans is not affiliated with, endorsed by or paid by any organization on this page. We list them because they help owners prepare, and because a business that has worked through its numbers with an adviser usually makes a clearer request.
Planning, projections and loan preparation: the Idaho SBDC
The Idaho Small Business Development Center runs six regional offices, and the Southeast Idaho office is in Pocatello, hosted by the Idaho State University College of Business at 921 8th Ave., Building #5, Room 328, Pocatello, ID 83209-8020, phone (208) 244-8521 (Idaho SBDC, locations page, checked 2026-10-16). SBDC advisers help with business plans, cash-flow projections and preparing for a loan, without charge for advising.
The other regional offices are in Coeur d'Alene, Lewiston, Boise, Twin Falls and Idaho Falls, which matters only if your business is based elsewhere in the state.
Preparing for a first SBDC appointment
- Bring the last twelve months of bank statements and your most recent tax return.
- Bring a draft of what the money is for, with quotes where you have them.
- Ask the adviser to stress-test the repayment against a slow month.
- Ask what the adviser would want to see before lending the money themselves.
Mentoring
Volunteer mentoring programs pair owners with experienced business people for ongoing advice, often alongside SBDC advising.
Networking and membership: chambers of commerce
A chamber of commerce offers networking, referrals and member events, and its membership directory is one of the places local customers look for businesses. Membership is usually paid.
Economic development and regional planning
Economic development organizations work on business attraction, expansion and site selection, and some administer revolving loan funds. A regional council of governments may also run business lending or planning programs for the counties it covers.
Downtown and commercial districts
Owners opening or relocating a shop downtown can ask the city or a downtown organization about events, signage and district programs.
City, county and state offices
- City of Pocatello (pocatello.gov): the City Clerk's office handles business licenses for specific types of business. See the license guide.
- Bannock County (bannockcounty.gov): county offices and records. Parts of Pocatello lie in Power County instead.
- Idaho Secretary of State (SOSBiz): entity registration, annual reports and UCC records. See the entity status guide.
Federal: the SBA
The U.S. Small Business Administration backs loans made by participating lenders and offers training through partners such as the SBDC network. Rowanglen Business Loans is not an SBA lender and does not arrange SBA loans.
Workshops, classes and peer groups
Beyond one-on-one advising, many owners learn from workshops on bookkeeping, pricing, hiring and marketing, and from peer groups of owners at a similar stage. Ask the SBDC which classes it runs or recommends, and ask any chamber or development group about events. A workshop on cash-flow forecasting is especially useful before a funding request, because the projection you build there is the one a lending partner will want to see.
Grants
Grants for established for-profit businesses are uncommon and usually tied to a specific purpose, place or program. If one fits, the SBDC can help you find and apply for it. Rowanglen has no grant program and does not arrange grants.
