Does your business need a Pocatello, ID license?
The City of Pocatello says it "issues business licenses for specific types of business" (City of Pocatello, Licenses and Permits, checked 2026-10-16). In other words, the city's approach is license-by-type rather than one license for everyone. The same page lists general contractor licenses among its other licenses and permits. The reliable way to find out whether your activity needs one is to ask the City Clerk's office before you open or change what you do.
Task 1: Applying for a license
- Confirm with the City Clerk's office, 911 N 7th Avenue, Pocatello, ID 83201 (phone 208-234-6217), whether your activity needs a city license and which one.
- Register the business entity with the Idaho Secretary of State first if you have not already, so the license is issued to the correct legal name.
- Check whether the application is available in the city's eTRAKiT portal; the city says applications for many of its licenses and permits are there.
- Gather what the application asks for, which may include the business address, owner details and any trade-specific documents.
- Keep a copy of the issued license with your business records.
We do not publish license fees. The city sets and publishes them, and they can change.
Task 2: Renewing a license
Licenses issued by type can carry different renewal cycles. Note the expiry date when the license is issued, put a reminder well ahead of it, and ask the Clerk's office how renewals are handled for your license type, including whether renewal can be done in eTRAKiT.
Task 3: Looking a license up
You may want to confirm your own license status before a lender asks, or check a contractor or supplier you plan to hire. Start with the Clerk's office, which can confirm what has been issued.
City, county and state: three separate records
| Level | Who keeps it | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| State entity record | Idaho Secretary of State (SOSBiz) | The LLC, corporation or other entity's legal existence and annual reports |
| State tax accounts | Idaho state agencies | Sales, payroll or other tax accounts, where they apply |
| City license | City of Pocatello, City Clerk | Licenses the city issues for specific types of business |
| County | Bannock County | County matters such as property; check with the county for anything that applies to your business |
Part of Pocatello lies in Power County rather than Bannock County, so confirm which county your address falls in. Our Idaho entity status guide covers the state record in detail.
Changes after the license is issued
A license reflects the business as it was when the license was issued. If you move, change ownership, change the legal name or add a new activity, ask the City Clerk's office whether the license needs updating, and update the Idaho Secretary of State record as well. Lenders compare the address and name on a license with the bank statements and the entity record, so a stale license can raise questions even when nothing else is wrong.
Licenses are issued by the city where the business operates. A business based in Chubbuck, Inkom or another nearby city deals with that city rather than Pocatello, and a business outside any city limits should ask its county.
Why lenders ask about local licenses
A partner wants to know the business is entitled to do the work that produces its revenue. For contractors, trades and other licensed activities, a missing or lapsed license can stop a request or become a condition of funding. Have copies of current licenses ready alongside your entity record and bank statements. How a request moves shows where these checks happen.
Quick checklist
- Entity active with the Idaho Secretary of State.
- City license confirmed with the Clerk's office, if your business type needs one.
- Expiry date noted and a renewal reminder set.
- Copies of every license kept with the business records.
- Legal name the same on the license, bank account and application.
